Remember the backlash over Pedro's "merkin" joke.....jaja. Buckle up though cause I think international "perceptions" aren't about to get better......

As far as this thread goes, it was your compatriot suegarn that got her panties all in a knot over a very innocuous joke. In my experience over a very long period of time and literally traveling around the world, I have noticed Canadians going out of their way to bash people from the US and rarely see an American ragging on Canadians. I once had one Canuck stalk me through the South Sea islands, constantly criticizing all Americans as if they were all cut from the same cloth. After I had repeatedly warned him to stay away from me and he kept it up, I punched him out. I'm sure that endeared him of Americans even more but he left me alone from then on.

Well actually it was Brigitte that had to tell the Canadian joke after I said that "whenever I am called a gringo I tell them I am Canadian and they usually apologize." No Canadian on this board has ever posted a rant about Americans like WD and Rico did about Canadians lately. Not even Pedro. Again it was after I joked about "ugly american"syndrome. Viajero used to get all wound up regularly.

Brigitte is French. And WD and Rico are morons.

PS Pedro, too.

Brigitte lived in the US and is married to an American. Guilty by association..........

I agree with the rest.

"Guilty by association"......was that the real reason she spent a night in jail?  I think we are getting to the bottom of this.  lol!

I don't usually post here, but I couldn't help but point that the other night (discussing post election emigrants), the mighty Steven Colbert pointed out that "Canada! - half the country is French, the other half has the culture of Wisconsin". As a Canadian, I thought that was pretty well spot on!

That's an unfair comparison and derogatory remark about Wisconsin, which has the best geographic outline of all of the states and provinces. Oh! (Truly off topic....) Today, the Dow closed above 19,000 for the first time in history. Just sayin'.

I always here the tip jokes from my Canadian friends not Gringoes. As someone said before " Gringoes really don't think of Canadians at all unless they live near the border.

Of course that would be true Brigitte. Most Americans are totally unaware of any country or its citizens or its history other than their own. Please note that I qualified the statement by saying "MOST".

I find this incredibly amusing since the American government has managed to poke its nose into just about every other country's business.

Sorry Bob...I know its political but, geez louise, I can only take so much. End rant.

Another example of the thin skinned Canadian with their inferiority complex.

The truth is there is nothing really remarkable about your country that attracts much attention to it. It isn't just Americans that are unaware. Ask the next Greek or Italian what they know about Canada. Then ask what they know about the USA.

I actually think you would be surprised by their answers.
I had a huge forum fight in PV with an American who stated "you would freeze if it wasn't for us". Wow, such arrogance since Canada is energy efficient and exports to the U.S.
We don't usually have to crow about our accomplishments. If you want to call it thin skinned for correcting misconceptions then be my guest. I am more than aware that not all Americans are cut from the same cloth and neither are we.
I'm still friends with Americans who voted for Trump. I just don't like their politics.

Quit picking on the Snowbirds, we need them for the economy.

I saw that my barber raised his rates by 10P.  When I got my hair cut, he charged me the old price because I tip.  The Snowbirds tip, they just don't know that they tip.

I have met pretty ignorant Canadians too.. Ignorance has nothing to do with a specific countru , there are ignorant morons in all countries.

I find that it is very comomon for smaller countries or les important countries to be more knowledgeable about the world that more important or larger countries. It can be amazing what people from smaller countries in Europe know about the larger countries when the people from those countries know nothing about the smaller countries..
The US pretty much overwhelms Northern America and there is a lot of ignorance about Canada or Mexico.. People in Lithuania know more about Russia than Russia knows about them... People in Bulgaria know more about France than the French know about Bulgaria..it is just the way it goes..nothing to get excited about..

The word Indian translates to Indio in our books, but means rube or hick to them. They always called Americans gringos and say they mean nothing by it.

Once I was talking to the head of public education in San Pedro La Laguna, a Tz'utujil Mayan Indian and he referred to me as a gringo. I asked him why he used such an offensive word and he replied, I mean no malice by it. I then said that it was OK, Indio.

The word indio is deemed offensive in this country also. Besides the meanings you mentioned, it is used widely by Mexicans to denigrate the indigenous.

Funny thing is I had not idea that was a bad word because I saw all the beer trucks with Indio on the side. Does the indigenous buy this beer???  Can you imagine N word on the side of a bud truck in Compton??  Some things just confuse me in Mexico and this is one of them.  Gringo doesn't bother me but never heard it in a negative sense but I am sure it happens.

Indio, in and of itself is not offensive. It depends how it is used. Much like the word gringo.

When referring to some historical prehispanic person or the logo of the beer which depicts same, it is not offensive. To call a contemporary individual Indio could and probably would be considered offensive or at the least stupid, especially if coming from an extranjero.
Having said that, one of Mexico's most beloved film actor/director/producer, Emilio Fernandez, had the apodo of "El Indio", affectionately,
He was a close friend of the Huston/Burton/Taylor triumvirate of that era.  "Gringos" Very Happy , might remember his small part in "Night of the Iguana" or his major role in "The Wild Bunch", two very popular "gringo movies" made in and about Mexico.
And one of the most popular comic actresses in Mexican film history was "La India María", who always played highly stereotyped roles.

Or rains. Many folks here are from western Oregon or Washington where snow is rare but depressing rain is not. We are much more connected to Canada culturally. We have CBC,CTV on our cable systems. Folks from Vancouver come down to watch Baseball when Toronto comes to Seattle. More folks from Canada than US at some games featuring Toronto. We vacation in Victoria or Vancouver and they come down to Seattle to play. To us it is very sad the militarization of the US/Canada border. Oh yea until Pot was legalized in Oregon and Washington much of the better stuff was walked across the border from B.C. to US thus the term B.C. Bud which was very popular in Seattle. Both cultures eat crab and Salmon and smoke pot in great numbers laugh out loud.

Indio and India was the way to refer to indigenous in the past and it not politically correct any longer, language changes. I pretty much most of my time 6 to 8 months of the year working with indigenous and most of them do not like the word and think it is insulting. It is not as strong as the N word at all but it is derogatory- and they do not like it.

Yes, in Canada we no longer call native people "Indians". That is not PC anymore. I just learned we don't call the northern native people "Eskimos" anymore either. I used the term recently and someone told me it is rude now........go figure?

jivaro, Arabe  and many other words that took on a derogatory meaning or where used to put people down sometimes are not pc any longer. Negro went to black and then people of color...in France  negre  is now the English word black.. go figure..

If you want to call someone "Indian", there are over a billion in Asia that are not offended at all. There are several Indian restaurants in GDL that have nothing to with Mexican cuisine.  In fact they like being called Indian.  Very Happy
The Spaniards weren't too smart when it came to geography or identifying nationalities.
