I am suggesting a reality of what could be, what should be - if you want to attract a young family from Silicon Valley to work on your robots, it would be nice if they could just load up the mini van they probably own, get state plates and licensing when they get here. Seamless - how much financial harm has taken place - the Mexican government will be taxing these families for many years to come. This is working for Canada, which processes 300,000 immigrants per year, Mexico, well under a quarter of that.

One of the reasons given was that it was to help the Mexican auto sales industry, which I'm sure it did!
And in any case, once you move to Mexico, you give up using the word "should". Anyone who's been here over a year or so knows why.
lol!

Yep.  I know of one well-known couple who decided to have the wife stay on temporary with the beloved car in her name, while the husband went permanente and got a Mexican plated car.  All in order to keep the car.  Some things, IMO, are just more trouble than they're worth, but there are plenty of people who think otherwise. CARLOVE can be a problem. Very Happy

In some cases it is not CARLOVE, it is economics. The car is paid for, so they would like to keep what is already theirs and fully paid for instead of wasting money buying another car. Makes sense to me. We sure didn't want to have this additional expenditure either.

If you consider trade-in value of a ten year old car, plus the cost of importation, inspections, plating, and the trip to the border for exporting & importing, hotels & meals for those days waiting, plus the trip, and the economics don‘t look so good.
It might be better to find a buyer who would, with your permission, buy your car and drive it north instead of flying, giving them the bonus of being able to take more baggage or pets. Then, you can decide what to buy in Mexico and also be free of paperwork, fees and deposits whenever you might want to cross the border with your Mexican plated car.

Neither did we, but the law is clear and if we wanted to become permanente, we knew what we had to do, whether we wanted to, or not. Our vehicle was paid for, too, but we followed the law, sold it and bought an inexpensive Mexican compact car with no frills. The other option was moving back to the states, but that wasn't the plan, and there's no point in wasting energy fighting the laws of the country you choose to live in.
