DRIVING MEXICAN-PLATED CAR TO U.S.

Post by Minervajt on Wed Apr 11, 2018 3:11 pm

This topic has been discussed in the past, but I'm wondering about any recent experiences by US citizens in crossing the border with a mexican-plated car??? We'll be crossing in Nogales with a 2015 Honda Fit and staying only temporarily. Thanks!

Make sure that you have vehicle insurance for your stay in the USA.

My Qualitas policy has liability coverage in the US but the limits may not meet the requirements of the individual states that you are driving in. With my Mexican plated car, the DPS officer in Texas stopped me for no reason other than my Jalisco plates. I guess that is called "license plate profiling." He was Mexican American but could not speak, read, or write Spanish so I translated for him and showed him the Qualitas 800 number to call to get an English speaking CSR if he did not believe me.

I got a good laugh out of it. Bienvenidos a EUA!

I've never shown anything at the US border except my passport.

We have crossed several times at the Mariposa crossing (Nogales) and have been asked for the "ownership papers" for our Mexican plated vehicle.

We've driven all over the US in our Jalisco plated car with never a problem. We do supplement our US coverage on our Mexican policy with additional coverage.

I have never had a problem. Take all papers. Insurance is very important.

Got stopped twice....because I had strange plates, but no problem and very courteous. One was a Mex American policeman. Watch out for the search and seizure law in several states. They can take your car without any charges and they can keep it. If you have Mexican plated car I think your chances of seizure are greater. For myself, I will not drive my Mexican plated car to the USA

Times have changed over the years. I drove my Mexican car in the US in 2010. We live in a different world now.

The search and seizure laws are a major concern and the American attitude toward Mexico is different than 2010 I think if you have a Mexican plated car, you are a prime target for search and seizure because Americans think all Mexicans are drug dealers.

As I said....back in the old days I had no concerns nor problems. I failed to make that clear. Guess I am just getting too old to fast.

Have to agree with you... Too old too fast... We have driven to Texas with no problem... We did purchase a policy before crossing the border... The problem is that the charge was for a month ($150 USD) and we were staying 10 days... Good idea to check with your Mexican insurer for coverage in the states... We will do so next time...

They can search, but they can't "seize" unless you have something naughty on board, so this is no time to carry recreational contraband along.
